Dropbox for big data

The consumer internet revolution has changed the way people discover, try and use new services. Enormous value has been created by providing free or inexpensive easy-to-use cloud-based solutions to manage so many aspects of our lives.

It is amazing how slowly that same process is happening in the world of business software. The cost of managing a long and difficult sales process drives prices higher and makes them more opaque. It focuses research and development towards creating a more complex and fully featured product (to justify the high price). On the customers' side, higher prices and more complex products require longer due diligence and decision processes.

Some notable exceptions like Dropbox and Tableau have taken a consumer approach to the enterprise, by sneaking into organizations from the bottom up very successfully. Innovative employees who need to solve a problem have the opportunity to try out a new product and become champions within their organizations of that solution selling it from the inside.

That reduces the cost of sales which in turn allows to focus their engineering teams on building a simple and powerful product at low prices.

At MegaPivot, we believe that the adoption of big data in corporations is being held back by the upfront costs and complexities of full-fledged enterprise software offerings. Building a Hadoop clusters requires in-house data scientists, a large IT project and often steep consulting fees. At the same time the complexity of running map reduce jobs limits its use in practice to a limited number of business-critical analyses. IT teams involvement lengthens the feedback cycle needed to tweak reports and churn out actionable insights.

Business intelligence teams, executives and analysts often are then confined to temporary solutions built on monster Excel or PowerPivot models.

We built a solution which allows business analysts to independently upload their data, of any size, to our scalable big data cluster and run queries on them, either in an SQL-like language or even more simply by creating pivot tables with a drag-and-drop interface.

No risks, no upfront costs and a simple, useful product.
